Hornby’s New Black Five on Test - The Yorkshire Dales Model Railway
This week I give 45157 ‘The Glasgow Highlander’ a run on both layouts
The modifications I made to the loco are:
- I reduced the loco to tender gap
- Removed the working lamps and replaced with lamp irons
- filled the body with lead to improve traction
- Replaced the smokebox door dart

Excelent model railway video. ❤
Excelent. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
Seriously good.
Thanks!
Also Lewis to me Hornby should have made so all the lamp irons were electrically "live" and using their own Hornby lamps different codes could be shown to indicate the different types of train being hauled. As shown on your model that's the code for a class 8 or fully unfitted goods train. Sure the locos now cost a Kings ransom so why not go the "whole hog" and have it so that different codes with lighted lamps could be displayed. That then would really be a HUGE leap in model realism. On Bullied pacifics the lights are already fixed in place with them only being used at night time and discs being used in the day but to denote a train's destination not the type of train. So having a Bullied model where all the lights could be lit up to show different train's destination would be another string to Hornby's bow.
Watching again for the 100th time 😂... The details you add are so good mate. I need to whip out the static grass fly swotter and stop putting it off. First I'll need to get the ballast done...just needed a kick up the backside 😂 👍 Scratch building looks really rewarding, i think ill have to scratch build the main station as cant find anything that will fit that doesnt look a bit naff 😮
Great layout and the sound effects are awesome.
Thanks!
Beautiful layout..so realistic the loco sounds are great.
Thank you 👍🏻
The layout scenes are wonderful, the locomotives plus consist are perfect, and the addition of sound from real steam locos just completes the experience so thanks. Great video, Jersey Bill
Thanks very much, appreciate it.
looking awsome mate
Thanks 😀
Very nice done video :)
Thank you 👍🏻
Great layout. Done so well.
Thanks!
Another question. You have reduced the loco to tender gap. Wondering which method you have used for that. A method has been described on a well known railway social media site on how to do that. Reduced from 5.5 to 3mm without any wiring changes.
I think I copied that exact article you mention Dave, if it was the one on RMweb. It worked really well 👍🏻
@@MouldyRaspberry That was me. zr2498. Really pleased that it has proved helpful, and has also worked on your Black 5 👍
@@MouldyRaspberry that was my input. Pleased it worked. Dave
Beautiful layout may I ask where you got the point rodding ?

A real winner Lewis with the black 5 working hard on what looks like a parcels turn .Like the side on shots & every thing else in this video , a real winner .😊
Thanks! 😀
Great video. I love your layout.
Thanks!
Thanks again.
Glad you liked it 👍🏻
Good work on doing this. So pretty please do Pines Express train shots with 75062 wearing The Cambrian Coast Express headboard on its head and two headlamps on both lamp irons on the right and the left on its bufferbeam, and piloting 92211 on the Pines Express with eleven Express coaches being a maroon coach, a crimson and cream colored coach, five maroon coaches, six green coaches, and a crimson and cream colored coach, 75053 wearing The Cambrian Coast Express headboard on the middle lamp iron of its buffer beam next to the white headlamp on the right side of its bufferbeam and a white headlamp on its head and piloting 92167 on the Pines Express with twelve Express coaches being a maroon coach, five crimson and cream colored coaches, and six green coaches, 73030 wearing two white discs on the right and left lamp irons of its bufferbeam piloting 92 Squadron on the Pines Express with ten Express coaches with a maroon coach, four crimson and cream colored coaches, and five green coaches, and 76114 wearing two headlamps on its bufferbeam with one in the middle and one on the left and piloting 73109 on the Pines Express with thirteen Express coaches with a red coach, six green coaches, and six crimson and cream colored coaches to recreate the scenes of Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway shots of the Heyday of British Steam Volume 1, Archive British Steam Volume 2: Bygone Days Captured Forever, and British Railways Steam, Mouldy Raspberry.
All great ideas! I’ll try and do some of those 😬😬😬

Beautiful loco ' and great weathering '
Many thanks!
Very nice weathering on the loco - enjoyed that 👍
Thanks 👍🏻
Is it just me, or were you a bit less generous to the model with the weathering😊. Was great to see it travel the Ponden/Buckdale route, well justified. Lovely gem of a video again
Yes I kept this one quite clean 😬 Glad you liked it 👍🏻
Excellent as usual Lewis, nice to see both layouts
Thanks Barry 👍🏻
An Absolute Freight Fest 👌🏻- Quality Vid as Usual MR 👍🏻
Thank you 👍🏻
Much excellent realism there - thank you for sharing! 👍
Thanks!
Another day on the Yorkshire Dales. That may be the longest train I have seen you run, Lewis. Very nice. looks like you have a few deceased sheep here and there.
Yes that’s about the max the Black 5 can handle! Haha true, I blame my dog for that.
Lewis, your videos just keep getting better and better. Cheers Greg
Thanks Greg!
Your skills of layout building, weathering, detailing and video making are awesome.
Thank you 😬
Brilliant. Superb sound track. Great variety of vans too (especially the Western ones 🤣). 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
Looks good
Thanks 👍🏻
wonderful
Thanks!
Looks amazing like always!
Thank you!
Fantastic Lewis, every time I watch one of your videos I notice something different, you are a superb craftsman
Thank you 😀
Wonderful atmosphere. Who needs to go to the NYMR when this video is available. I see the original Hornby lamps have been removed. I assume something such as Modelu lamps have replaced them?
Thanks! Yes spot on, Modelu lamps.
Nice video!
Thanks!
Fantastic .Love the sound .
Many thanks!
Bonjour Lewis, Nice to see the Black 5 running well and you did a great job in reducing the tender to loco gap. Looks so much more realistic. Excellent weathering and the filming & editing on both of your fine layouts is amazing as usual ! Thanks for sharing and greetings, Filip
Thanks Filip! It was a bit of a pain to do, but I think it was worth it.
Hi Lewis, well that looks a lovely loco..............they really do look stunning. Clearly I am guessing not a dub at all. Thanks and all the best Dave.
Thanks Dave. No issues with mine at all - I think it was just the LMS versions that were a bit more prone to faults. I haven’t heard of many issues with the BR versions.
This Black 5 looks better than the LMS version. Your choice of changes to the lamps was a good one.
Yes I agree!
I love the weathering on the vans, and a nice prototypical mixture,I commend you sir,I won’t even get started on the locos and your layout, superb at the very least
Thank you!
Another super video Lewis.well done .
Thanks 👍
I'm sure that grass is actually growing in your semi-abandoned sidings. Loving the use of the 'old' layout.
Haha it could be! Thanks, it’s nice to be able to give it a run every now and then.
Nice to see that you’re back on the old layout Lewis What I loved about your channel was you gave us a little bit of “Everything” and I for one loved watching the creative side of you when you built a new “Scene” and how you effortlessly transformed a piece of flat board into a beautiful country scene I understand what with the layout being in the loft there’s limited time to work due to the weather conditions
Thanks John. Me too, if I had more space in my house I’d love to get building something again! I’ve found a really good channel that you might like, this guy is making some amazing scenes: ua-cam.com/video/kvYeDLkWE1U/v-deo.htmlsi=iPu59lo7pUfsVSNr
@@MouldyRaspberryLewis thank you for recommending Horshey I do follow him but I let him know that you recommended him What I was talking about was “Ponden Station” that you completely revamped I know it was about 5 years ago or so Thanks for your quick reply
Lewis, will we ever see you make an exhibition layout?
I’d love to if I had a bit more room to store one!
@@MouldyRaspberry how about converting the one in your parents loft?
And all is well in the world once more…. 😊
😀
Another great video. Thanks.
Cheers Ralph 👍🏻
When an engine is given a test run, the first test is light engine, with no load at all. The second test is with a light load, say two coaches or four wagons and a Guard's Van, if all has gone well with the first. The third test is a fully loaded passenger train, consisting of as many as six coaches. This happens over the period of a week or two, if the test takes place on the main line. For a branchline, or heritage railway, the tests are carried out over the period of a few days. It's good you've got the Jack of all Trades running nicely, but never put lead in the boiler. This can make the model dangerous for children to handle. Take the lead out and put back the proper mechanics. Better to be safe than sorry.
Ok?
Thanks Kelly. The lead is sealed so nobody will she getting poisoned don’t worry!
Yep she looks really good now Mr Mouldy. Black 5's are everyone's favourite I think. Cheers. 😅
Agreed John - thanks!
Wonderful camera work showing off your layout Lewis 👍
